As a growing success, Torrey Pines students continue to score at an exceptionally high level on the state assessment tests that show student achievement. According to the schools Academic Performance Index, which is assessed by the state, Torrey Pines has maintained a school and statewide ranking of at least nine out of ten possible. More then test scores though, it is a goal of the teachers that students not only do well on this testing, but actually absorb information and enjoy the learning process.
Classroom size varies from grade to grade; however, kindergarten through the third grade has roughly twenty students to a class, forth and fifth grades with more students at approximately twenty-five. The YMCA, located just across the street from Torrey Pines, offers before and after school day care programs for students. During these programs students are encouraged to take part in physical activities and games.
For students who may have a bit of trouble keeping up with assignments, or simply need a little extra help with reading or math homework, tutoring services are offered by students who attend UCSD and Torrey Pines teachers every Wednesday afternoon. Reading, music, and art programs are strongly emphasized by the school, placing importance on every child’s unique creativity and expression. Teachers encourage students to express their feelings in fun and artistic ways.
Torrey Pines Elementary School’s mission is to teach children in a learning conductive environment where each and every child is rewarded with the feeling of success in their academic achievements. Students are taught critical thinking and continually encouraged to ask questions and respectfully express their feelings on the different material matter.
