Opening its doors in 1999, Preuss Model School provides an intensive college prep education for motivated low-income students middle through high school, who often become the first in their families to attend college. For students who identify this goal, the school matriculates the students who are competitively eligible to enter the University of California or other selective institutions of higher education. The school is jointly chartered by the San Diego Unified School District and (University of California, San Diego) UCSD, and currently enrolls one hundred and fifty students grades six through eight, and a total of seven hundred and sixty-seven students from grades six through twelve.
Students selected by Preuss School are done so through a process of application and lottery. In order for a applicant to be eligible for the acceptance by chance, he or she must meet three criteria: the student is from a low income family, does not have a parent or guardian that has graduated from a four year university or college, and has the academic potential and motivation to benefit from such an intensive college preparatory program. The school is funded entirely by community donations.
Preuss students attend 74,669 instructional minutes compared to the State requirement of 64,800, and classrooms have roughly ten students less per class size compared to the district-wide average of thirty-four. The school has a high percentage of Advanced Placement students, and administers roughly two-hundred and eighty four tests at the end of each school year.
Preuss School has an extremely high success rate, with roughly ninety percent of the graduating class accepted to one or more of the following universities and colleges: UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbra, UC Santa Cruz, New York University, Stanford, MIT, Dartmouth, St. Mary’s, USD, and a large number of the Cal State universities including Long Beach and San Diego State.
It is the goal of Preuss School to make a large improvement in educational practices and to provide to low-income student populations the opportunity of an intensive college preparatory school, which are significantly underrepresented on the University of California campuses. The school provides an encouraging and empowering environment to inspire and help students develop a much greater sense of self-worth and confidence. A sense of pride is created from the students academic accomplishments, and there is emphasis placed on asking questions and forming logical and critical thinking processes. Graduates are left with the drive to continue to learn and enjoy a future most say they had never even dreamed of.
