Explorer Academy

As parents whose children are educated in La Jolla, California, Gregg and Lisa Whitney understand first hand the importance of selecting the right school, whether public or private, for your child.   Because many of the homes sold by Gregg and Lisa Whitney are to families, they have provided this helpful school information to you to help in your real estate decision process.

Opening its doors to one hundred and sixteen students in September of 2000, Explorer Elementary was built to be a center for educational excellence for children in the elementary levels.  The schools goal is to challenge children, inspire them, and create enthusiastic and eager learners, making absolute sure that each and every child develops a sturdy foundation of information and skills that are strong and complete.

Over the past six years, Explorer Elementary has proven a great success, with extraordinary test scores; it has already been recognized as a California Distinguished School, meeting an annual waiting list that has reached over six hundred.

At Explorer Elementary, what children learn is strongly viewed as important as how they learn.  The teacher’s educational program is designed to teach all children with dignity, as the faculty places great emphasis on providing an appropriate and suitable educational program to each child.  It is recognized that each student has their own learning pace and style, that of which is no better or worse then any other, simply different.  It is important to the school that its learning program teaches students empowering skills that will help them to develop into well-rounded, self-motivated, life-long learners.

Gently guided toward each child’s advancement of knowledge and development of skills, Explorer Elementary provides lesson plans which place emphasis on critical thinking, asking questions, and collaborative experiences.  Designed to encourage students to develop social behaviors that are positive, these experiences include cooperative, collaborative, and compassionate interactions with others.  It is the belief of the school that such approaches to education allow students meaningful opportunities to identify connections with their surrounding world.

Lessons are taught at a scholarly level and classrooms address each student’s academic needs.  A variety of strategies are used by teachers for accelerated learning in order to elevate the level of thinking in all subject areas.  Explorer Elementary encourages higher-order thinking skills, and helps students to develop thinking strategies to find evidence for concepts in their academic work.
